People often gets confused between renewal of Passport and Re-issue of Passport. There is bit difference between the two. Renewal is like extending the Passport Validity i.e If your passport is valid for say 5 Yrs , you can renew it and can extend the validity to 10Years. For Renewal you don’t have to pay an extra charge for the same.
Re-issue is just like applying for new Passport. You have a fees applicable for this , which is now around Rs.1000/-. So for extending the Validity no fees is charged. It should be free of cost. But most often the terms and conditions will be changing so its recommended to refer the Indian passport website for more accurate information. The procedure for renewal of passport is very simple. Before that I will let you know the procedure for re-issue of passport.
How to apply for Passport (Re-issue ) ? You can apply for re-issue of passport in case of following things.
- Your passport has been expired
- Your passport is going to be expired in one year or with in one year.
- Stolen
- Lost or Damaged
- Pages in the existing passport has been exhausted
- You have any personal particulars needs to updated like Address, Correction is your name or address
- Addition of Spouse name

How to Renew my passport ? Renewal of passport is done if your passport has short term validity, its called as Short Validity Passport (SVM). Its the Assistant Passport Officer (APO) who decides what should be validity of the passport.You need to download Application Form No.2 from www.passport.gov.in website and fill this application and submit to nearest passport office.
Note: The Same Application Form No.2 can also be used to making application for Police Clearance Certificate, Deletion of ECR Stamp, Inclusion of Spouse’s name and change of address
If you fall under Passport Seva Kendra , you can visit and renew your passport.Find your nearest Passport Seva Kendra to get forms and do everything offline. Important! Online facility is only available for applicants residing under jurisdiction of Passport Offices (POs) Ahmedabad , Amritsar , Bangalore , Chandigarh , Chennai , Coimbatore , Delhi , Hyderabad , Jaipur , Jalandhar , Kolkata , Madurai , Surat , Trichy , Trivandrum and Visakhapatnam. This facility will be available for applicants all over India soon.
You can go to nearest passport seva kendra and fill the passport renewal application form and submit it. There should no charges for the renewal if your passport is not expired. If your passport is expired , you need again apply for re-issue of passport which should be same as Fresh passport application. Also if you are applying passport with in 3 years of your passport expiry , there will no Police Verification required. Also make sure you carry all original documents (Passport, Identity cards, Couple of Address proofs, HR letter , Post paid Mobile Bills ).
